Our gift advice on how to choose
a perfect gift

There’s a saying that it’s the thought that counts, true but… in reality the thought behind the present is what really counts.

As gift advice goes, a perfectly chosen gift shows we are in tune with the receiver’s interests and needs and know what brings them pleasure. Most importantly it shows we understand and appreciate the person and genuinely wish to make them happy.

In general women prefer sentimental and romantic gifts, while most men will love something practical and more expensive. However, it’s not always the case.

A perfect gift is difficult to define because it is different for each individual. Nevertheless, we would like to give you some gift advice and a list of important tips that will help when choosing a perfect gift.

1. Make people feel that you value them

“A gift is never about need. It's about thanking people.” ~ Lash Fary,

When choosing a gift it is more important to focus on making people feel special in your eyes than getting them something useful. Think of what you actually want to express through your gift and if the person will feel appreciated. Some of the best gifts are those that touch people emotionally and evoke sentiments.

For example, your grandmother will most likely appreciate a collection of music from her youth, reminding her of special moments in life much more than a pair of woollen socks that will keep her warm in winter. She will see that you value what is dear to her and will feel important.

2. Show you are in tune with people’s interests and needs

One of the main characteristics of the best gift is its appropriateness.

Pay attention to the person’s likes and dislikes from their favourite brands, colours to hobbies! Also people like to know that you observe, listen to them and remember what brings them pleasure.

It’s always great to know that somebody made a note of the gorgeous jewellery item we were pointing at in one of the shop windows or got us the latest CD we were raving about lately.

3. Give people something you know they really desire, but would not spend on themselves

We all have things we love but may consider some of them too expensive, too extravagant or an unnecessary luxury to get for ourselves. Spoil people by giving them something they normally wouldn’t treat themselves to.

A holiday gift idea is great for somebody who loves but can’t really afford travelling, designer bag for mom, favourite magazine subscription for dad, or anything else they would love to have or do. You will definitely show your generosity and deep interest in making somebody’s small dreams come true.

4. Keep to their standard level

Be generous enough to give a gift that is up to the receiver’s standards, however, it’s worth to remember that without intending to, you might make some people feel uneasy or obliged with a very expensive gift.

The general rule is the more closely you are related with the person the more lavishly you spend on a gift. However, when it comes to presents unless the person is extremely needy it’s not really a matter of money.

Best presents are those you genuinely put your thought into and don’t lack in your emotional investment. Also, most often presents require more ingenuity than money.

5. Present a gift with style and affection

“Every gift which is given, even though is be small, is in reality great, if it is given with affection. “ ~ Pindar

On those rare occasions when we receive a gift with a tag from the previous giver still on or a gift wrapped in brown shopping paper will no doubt make us feel disrespected and not valued.

Then even the best gift will most likely loose its appeal. Presented with style or ingenuously wrapped gift builds more suspense and anticipation. Click to read some of our gift wrapping ideas.

Needless to say that a hand signed card gives the personal touch and is simply mandatory on some occasions like Mother's or Valentine's Day.

Also never underestimate the power of a beautiful flower bouquet.

When giving a present to our partners, husbands and wives try to make the entire day special to accompany the gift by taking them out for a meal or giving them a break from it all setting them free from domestic upkeep.
